Computer Hardware & Networking Engineer Job DescriptionA Computer Hardware & Networking Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of an organization's computer systems, including the physical components (hardware) and the connectivity structure (network). This role ensures the reliability and efficiency of the company's IT infrastructure.Core Responsibilities1. Hardware ManagementInstallation and Configuration: Install, configure, and upgrade computer hardware, operating systems, and applications (e.g., desktops, laptops, servers, printers).Maintenance and Repair: Diagnose and repair faults in hardware components (e.g., motherboards, hard drives, memory), escalating issues to vendor support when necessary.Inventory Control: Maintain an accurate inventory of all IT assets, managing hardware life cycles from procurement to disposal.2. Network InfrastructureDesign and Setup: Assist in the design and deployment of LANs (Local Area Networks), WANs (Wide Area Networks), and wireless networks.Troubleshooting: Resolve complex network issues, including connectivity problems, bandwidth limitations, and security breaches, focusing on devices like routers, switches, and firewalls.Security: Implement and maintain network security measures, including access controls, VPNs, and regular system backups.3. Core Responsibilities and DutiesThe primary duties of a Computer Hardware Engineer include:Design and Development:Design new computer hardware, creating detailed schematics and blueprints for components.Develop and build components such as processors, circuit boards (PCBs), memory devices, routers, and other peripherals.Design hardware for systems that may be embedded in other products, like cars, home appliances, or medical devices (Internet-of-Things or IoT devices).Testing and Validation:Build, test, and modify prototypes using working models or computer simulations.Execute comprehensive test plans to validate the performance, functionality, durability, and reliability of hardware products.Analyze test data and modify designs as needed to eliminate errors and meet specifications.Maintenance and Upgrades:Update and modify existing computer equipment to ensure compatibility with new software and enhanced performance.Analyze system data to implement necessary hardware configuration changes.Perform root cause analysis and troubleshoot hardware defects and system issues.Collaboration and Oversight:Collaborate closely with software developers and other engineers (like electrical engineers) to ensure seamless compatibility and successful product integration.Oversee and manage the manufacturing and assembly process for computer hardware to maintain quality standards.Create and maintain detailed specifications and documentation for components and finished systems.

Responsibilities:Hardware Design & Development:Design, develop, and test computer hardware components and systems, including circuit boards, microprocessors, memory devices, input/output (I/O) interfaces, and other peripheral devices.Create detailed technical specifications, block diagrams, and schematics for new hardware designs.Select appropriate electronic components (ICs, passives, connectors) based on performance, cost, availability, and reliability requirements.Prototyping & Testing:Build and test prototypes of new hardware designs, performing rigorous functional, performance, stress, and reliability testing.Conduct debugging, fault isolation, and root cause analysis of hardware issues using specialized test equipment.Verify designs against specifications and industry standards.Schematic Capture & PCB Layout:Utilize Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools for schematic capture and oversee or perform Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout design, ensuring signal integrity and manufacturability.Collaborate with PCB fabricators and assemblers to ensure quality production.System Integration:Integrate hardware components with firmware, operating systems, and application software to ensure seamless system functionality.Work closely with software and firmware development teams to define hardware-software interfaces.Documentation & Compliance:Create and maintain comprehensive design documentation, including design specifications, test plans, test reports, manufacturing instructions, and Bill of Materials (BOMs).Ensure all hardware designs comply with relevant industry standards (e.g., PCIe, USB, Ethernet), regulatory requirements (e.g., EMI/EMC, RoHS, WEEE), and safety certifications.Troubleshooting & Debugging:Diagnose and resolve complex hardware issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions throughout the product lifecycle.Provide technical support for manufacturing and field issues related to hardware.Research & Innovation:Stay updated with the latest advancements in computer hardware technology, microarchitectures, and industry trends.Contribute to research initiatives and explore innovative solutions for future product development.Collaboration:Work effectively in a cross-functional team environment, collaborating with mechanical engineers, software developers, firmware engineers, quality assurance, and manufacturing teams.Local Communication:Communicate complex technical concepts clearly and concisely.
