Core Responsibilities
A Quality Engineers daily tasks typically fall into four main categories:
1. Process Design & Risk Mitigation
FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis): Identifying potential failure points in a process before production starts.
Quality Planning: Developing inspection methods, sampling plans (AQL), and setting pass/fail criteria.
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Writing the rulebook for how products should be made and tested.
2. Monitoring & Auditing
Statistical Process Control (SPC): Using math and charts (like Control Charts) to monitor production in real-time and detect if a process is drifting out of spec.
Audits: Performing internal audits to ensure the team is following ISO 9001, AS9100, or other regulatory standards.
3. Problem Solving (Root Cause Analysis)
CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Action): When a defect is found, the QE leads the investigation using tools like the 5 Whys or Fishbone (Ishikawa) Diagrams.
NCR (Non-Conformance Reports): Documenting exactly what went wrong and how it was fixed.
4. Continuous Improvement
Lean & Six Sigma: Using methodologies like DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) to reduce waste and variability.
Supplier Quality: Working with vendors to ensure the raw materials coming in meet the company's standards.
