Job Description

A Purchase Manager in the food industry directs end-to-end procurement of raw materials, packaging, and ingredients. They negotiate contracts, manage vendor relations, and ensure uninterrupted production while enforcing strict food safety and regulatory compliance. This role is vital for optimizing costs and maintaining supply chain efficiency.

Essential Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or Food Technology/Science.

Experience: 8+ years of demonstrable purchasing or supply chain experience specifically within the food processing or FMCG sector.

Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of food industry compliance,

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and Certificate of Analysis (COA) verification.

Technical Skills: Proficiency in ERP systems (such as SAP), MIS reporting, and MS Excel.

Core Competencies

Negotiation & Communication: Ability to secure favorable contracts and resolve supply chain bottlenecks.

Analytical Thinking: Capability to forecast seasonal price fluctuations and track procurement metrics.

Key Responsibilities

Ingredient & Packaging Sourcing: Procure food-grade raw materials (spices, produce, additives), primary packaging (PET, glass, pouches), and secondary packaging in alignment with production demands.

Vendor Development: Identify, evaluate, and develop trusted domestic and international suppliers to optimize pricing and reduce material risks.

Quality & Compliance Control: Ensure all supplied materials meet food safety regulations, industry standards (such as FSSAI guidelines), and internal quality specifications.

Cost Optimization: Prepare cost-analysis reports, negotiate pricing and payment terms, and drive cost-reduction initiatives without compromising quality.

Inventory & Demand Planning: Collaborate with production, warehousing, and quality assurance teams to maintain optimal inventory levels and prevent production downtime.
