ground staff are responsible for ensuring the smooth functioning of airport and airline operations on the ground. they handle passenger services, baggage, cargo, and aircraft support activities while maintaining safety, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. the role requires excellent communication skills, customer service orientation, and the ability to work in fast-paced environments.
key responsibilities
passenger services
greet and assist passengers during check-in, boarding, and arrival.
verify tickets, travel documents, and baggage details.
provide information about flight schedules, delays, and airport services.
assist passengers with special needs (elderly, unaccompanied minors, prms – persons with reduced mobility).
handle customer complaints, lost baggage claims, and service recovery.
baggage & cargo handling
supervise baggage tagging, loading, unloading, and transfer processes.
ensure proper handling of special baggage (fragile, oversized, restricted items).
assist in cargo loading/unloading and documentation.
coordinate with ramp staff for safe aircraft turnaround.
flight & ground operations
manage boarding gates and ensure timely flight departures.
coordinate with flight crew, security, and operations control.
maintain flight-related reports and documentation.
support aircraft marshaling, towing assistance, and refueling coordination when required.
ensure compliance with airport safety and security protocols.
emergency & safety duties
assist in handling emergency situations (medical cases, evacuations, delays).
follow all safety procedures and assist passengers during disruptions.
ensure baggage and cargo comply with aviation security standards.
required skills & competencies
strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
excellent communication (verbal & written); multilingual ability is an advantage.
knowledge of airline systems (amadeus, sabre, galileo, etc.).
time management and ability to work under pressure.
problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
attention to detail and high safety awareness.
professional grooming and adherence to airline presentation standards.
flexibility to work in shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
qualifications
minimum: high school diploma or equivalent (bachelor’s preferred).
certification in aviation, hospitality, or customer service is an added advantage.
prior experience in customer service, hospitality, or airline/airport operations preferred.
medical fitness to meet airline/airport requirements.
work conditions
based at airports, indoors and outdoors.
shift-based work environment with irregular hours.
physical tasks including standing for long periods and handling baggage.
