🧾 Introduction

An MEP Estimation Engineer is responsible for calculating the cost of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing works in construction projects. The role focuses on preparing accurate quantities, rates, and overall project cost before execution starts.

This position is very important because even a small mistake in estimation can lead to major financial loss or project delay.

🎯 Key Responsibilities

1. 📊 Quantity Takeoff

Study drawings and specifications carefully

Calculate quantities for:

HVAC systems (ducting, piping, equipment)

Electrical systems (cables, panels, lighting)

Plumbing & firefighting systems

Prepare BOQ (Bill of Quantities)

2. 💰 Cost Estimation

Prepare detailed cost estimates based on quantities

Include:

Material cost

Labour cost

Equipment cost

Apply correct rates based on market or project location

3. 📑 Tender Preparation

Review tender documents and conditions

Prepare technical and commercial proposals

Fill BOQ sheets and submit tenders on time

4. 🤝 Vendor & Supplier Coordination

Collect quotations from suppliers and subcontractors

Compare rates and finalize the best option

Maintain a database of approved vendors

5. 📈 Rate Analysis

Break down each item into:

Material + Labour + Overheads + Profit

Prepare detailed rate analysis for items like:

Duct installation

Cable laying

Pipe installation

6. 🗂️ Documentation

Maintain estimation records and backup data

Prepare reports for management

Ensure all calculations are traceable and clear

7. 🔍 Value Engineering

Suggest cost-saving alternatives without affecting quality

Optimize material usage and design where possible

Good understanding of MEP drawings and systems

Strong knowledge of BOQ preparation

Basic understanding of construction methods

Good numerical and analytical skills

Ability to read tender documents clearly
