job summary:
the field engineer – ftth is responsible for the on-site installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of fiber optic network infrastructure at customer premises and within the field network. this role plays a key part in ensuring the quality, reliability, and performance of ftth services.
key responsibilities:
1. installation & commissioning
• install fiber optic cables, onts (optical network terminals), splitters, and other equipment at customer premises.
• perform splicing and termination of fiber cables, ensuring low loss and proper signal flow.
• conduct otdr and power meter tests to verify and certify installation quality.
2. fault diagnosis & repair
• identify and troubleshoot faults in the fiber network (both at the customer end and in the field).
• resolve physical connectivity issues, hardware failures, and signal loss problems.
• perform emergency repairs and service restoration with minimal downtime.
3. site surveys
• conduct site surveys for new connections to assess feasibility, cable routing, and material requirements.
• coordinate with customers to finalize installation plans based on site conditions.
4. customer interaction
• provide technical support and guidance to customers during and after installation.
• explain basic ftth equipment operation and service usage to end-users.
• handle customer complaints or escalations professionally and efficiently.
5. documentation & reporting
• maintain records of installation details, service calls, test results, and material usage.
• prepare daily reports and submit updates to supervisors or management.
6. equipment handling
• safely handle and transport ftth tools, splicing machines, otdrs, ladders, and fiber reels.
• ensure proper use and maintenance of all field equipment.
required skills & qualifications:
• diploma/iti in electronics, electrical, telecommunications, or a related field.
• 1–3 years of experience in ftth network installations and field operations (freshers with training can be considered).
• hands-on experience with fiber splicing, otdr testing, and optical power measurement tools.
• understanding of gpon technology and ftth network architecture.
• ability to work independently and manage tasks in the field.
• strong communication and customer service skills.
• willingness to travel and work flexible hours as needed.
preferred certifications (optional):
• ftth council certified installer or equivalent
• basic safety training or fiber handling certification
