role purpose
the general manager – plant will be responsible for overall plant operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective production of ethanol, along with power generation, utilities, and maintenance management. the role involves leading cross-functional teams to achieve production targets, statutory compliance, energy optimization, and continuous
key responsibilities
1. plant operations & production
• oversee end-to-end ethanol plant operations, including raw material handling, fermentation, distillation, dehydration, and storage.
• ensure optimum plant capacity utilization, yield improvement, and quality compliance.
• monitor and control production parameters to minimize losses and downtime.
• coordinate production planning in line with sales and dispatch schedules.
2. power & utilities management
• manage captive power plant / cogeneration systems, boilers, turbines, dg sets, cooling towers, compressors, and water treatment plants.
• ensure uninterrupted power and steam supply for ethanol production.
• optimize fuel consumption, energy efficiency, and utility costs.
• monitor electrical systems, ht/lt panels, and energy audits.
3. maintenance & engineering
• lead preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance for plant, power, and utility equipment.
• develop annual maintenance plans, shutdown schedules, and spare parts management.
• ensure equipment reliability, safety interlocks, and statutory inspections.
• coordinate with oems and contractors for amc and major overhauls.
4. safety, health & environment (she)
• ensure compliance with factory act, pollution control board (spcb), peso, boiler inspectorate, fire & safety norms.
• implement and monitor hira, loto, ptw, confined space, hot work permits, and emergency response systems.
• drive zero-accident culture and conduct regular safety audits and trainings.
• ensure etp/zld operations and environmental compliance.
5. quality & compliance
• ensure ethanol quality as per bis / omc specifications.
• maintain statutory records and coordinate with government authorities and auditors.
• ensure compliance with excise, ethanol movement, and denaturing regulations.
6. cost control & performance management
• prepare and control plant opex and capex budgets.
• identify cost reduction opportunities in energy, chemicals, manpower, and consumables.
• track kpis related to production, energy, maintenance, safety, and quality.
7. team leadership & development
• lead multidisciplinary teams (production, power, electrical, mechanical, utilities, safety).
• set performance goals, conduct reviews, and develop talent within the organization.
• promote a culture of accountability, discipline, and continuous improvement.
8. coordination & reporting
• provide regular mis and performance reports to top management.
• support management during inspections, audits, and lender visits.
• coordinate with vendors, contractors, and service providers.
educational qualifications
• . / in mechanical / electrical / chemical engineering
• mba / pg diploma in operations or energy management (preferred)
experience requirements
• 15–25 years of total experience in ethanol / distillery / biofuel plants
• minimum 5–7 years in a senior leadership role (gm / plant head / operations head)
• strong exposure to power plant operations, utilities, and energy optimization
