an aircraft technician is responsible for carrying out maintenance, inspection, repair, and troubleshooting of aircraft systems to ensure they remain airworthy, reliable, and compliant with aviation safety regulations. the role demands technical expertise, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety standards.
key responsibilities
aircraft maintenance & inspection
perform scheduled and unscheduled aircraft maintenance (line & base maintenance).
conduct detailed inspections of airframe, engines, avionics, hydraulics, and other systems.
identify, troubleshoot, and repair aircraft defects and system malfunctions.
replace and test aircraft components and assemblies as per maintenance manuals.
carry out preventive and corrective maintenance to minimize downtime.
compliance & documentation
ensure compliance with aviation regulations (easa, faa, dgca, icao, etc.).
maintain accurate maintenance records, logbooks, and service reports.
follow the aircraft maintenance manual (amm), minimum equipment list (mel), and illustrated parts catalog (ipc).
adhere to quality and safety procedures in line with company and regulatory requirements.
operational support
respond to aircraft on ground (aog) situations with prompt fault rectification.
use diagnostic tools and ground support equipment (gse) for troubleshooting.
assist in aircraft towing, refueling, and ground handling operations when required.
coordinate with engineers, supervisors, and flight crew for technical updates.
safety & standards
follow strict workplace and ramp safety procedures.
ensure compliance with safety management system (sms) protocols.
apply human factors training and fatigue risk management practices.
maintain high standards of workmanship to ensure flight safety.
technical development
keep up to date with new aircraft technologies and systems.
attend recurrent training, certifications, and regulatory examinations.
mentor and support junior technicians when required.
required skills & competencies
strong knowledge of aircraft systems (airframe, engine, avionics, hydraulics, electrical).
ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, amm, and technical manuals.
proficiency with aircraft maintenance software (amos, trax, ramco, etc.).
skilled in the use of diagnostic tools and precision instruments.
problem-solving and troubleshooting under time-critical conditions.
excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
high attention to detail and commitment to safety.
physical stamina to work in demanding environments (hangars, ramps, outdoors).
qualifications
diploma / degree in aircraft maintenance engineering (ame) or aeronautical engineering.
valid aircraft maintenance technician license (where applicable).
certifications in specific aircraft types (preferred but not always mandatory).
knowledge of aviation regulations (easa part-66, faa part-147, dgca car, etc.).
minimum 0–6 years of experience in aircraft maintenance (trainee roles available for freshers).
work conditions
based at airports, hangars, or maintenance facilities.
shift-based work including nights, weekends, and holidays.
exposure to loud noise, weather conditions, and physical tasks.
high responsibility environment where safety is the top priority.
