The powers of Income Tax Officer may vary based on their post (., Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, etc.) and the nature of the case .

The work of a Tax Assistants in the CBIC is totally clerical. Their work mainly includes dispatching and preparing some reports of the section he is posted in. Mostly they work under a Superintendent or Appraiser but in some places, he also works under Examiner, PO, and Excise Inspector.
