As a Perfusionist, you will play a crucial role in supporting patients during heart surgeries and other medical procedures that require a heart-lung machine. Your primary responsibility will be to operate this equipment and ensure that patients receive the necessary blood flow and oxygen during surgery.
**Key Responsibilities:**
- **Operate Heart-Lung Machines:** Monitor and manage machines that take over the job of the heart and lungs during surgery, ensuring proper blood circulation and oxygenation to the patient.
- **Prepare Equipment:** Properly set up and check all equipment before surgeries to ensure they function correctly and safely during procedures.
- **Monitor Patient Vital Signs:** Continuously observe the patient’s vital signs and conditions, making necessary adjustments to the machines to respond to any changes.
- **Work with Surgical Team:** Collaborate closely with surgeons, nurses, and other medical professionals to provide optimal care during procedures.
- **Maintain Records:** Keep detailed and accurate records of the procedures, equipment used, and any changes in patient status for future reference and review.
**Required Skills and Expectations:**
To be a successful Perfusionist, you should have strong technical skills, particularly in operating complex medical equipment. Attention to detail and the ability to respond quickly in high-pressure situations are essential. A background in health sciences or medicine, paired with relevant certifications, will be important for this role. Effective communication skills are necessary to work well with a team and support patient care. Previous experience in a similar role is preferred, ideally between 2 to 8 years.
