job summary:
an ordinary seaman (os) assists the deck crew in vessel operations and maintenance. this is an entry-level position that provides hands-on experience and is a stepping stone toward becoming an able seaman or higher ranks in the deck department.
key responsibilities:
perform routine deck duties including cleaning, painting, and maintenance.
assist in cargo operations (loading/unloading) as directed.
handle mooring and unmooring lines during port operations.
stand watch (lookout duties or helm when trained) during navigation.
assist with the operation and maintenance of deck machinery and equipment.
clean and maintain the vessel's deck areas.
follow safety procedures and participate in safety drills (fire, abandon ship, man overboard).
assist officers and other crew as required.
ensure cleanliness of the accommodation and common areas.
qualifications and skills:
minimum educational qualification: 10th pass or equivalent.
stcw basic safety training certificate (mandatory).
valid seaman’s book / cdc (continuous discharge certificate).
basic knowledge of seamanship and deck operations.
physically fit and able to work in harsh marine environments.
willingness to learn and follow instructions.
good teamwork and communication skills.
experience:
fresher or 0–1 year of experience onboard a vessel is acceptable.
experience on cargo, tanker, or offshore vessels is an advantage.
working conditions:
long working hours, including night shifts (watchkeeping).
exposure to outdoor elements, saltwater, and rough weather.
rotational contracts (4-6 months onboard, followed by leave).
