Major Responsibilities
Specimen Collection & Handling
Collect biological samples (blood, urine, stool, sputum, tissue, etc.)
Label, store, and transport specimens correctly to prevent contamination
Verify patient identity and test requests before processing
Laboratory Testing & Analysis
Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests under established protocols
Conduct tests in areas such as:
Hematology
Clinical Chemistry
Microbiology
Immunology/Serology
Urinalysis
Blood banking (where applicable)
Operate laboratory instruments and analyzers accurately
Equipment Operation & Maintenance
Calibrate, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment
Perform quality control checks on instruments and reagents
Identify and troubleshoot basic equipment malfunctions
Quality Control & Assurance
Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Run control samples to ensure accuracy and reliability of results
Document quality control data and report deviations
Data Recording & Reporting
Accurately record test results in laboratory information systems (LIS)
Validate and report results to physicians or senior laboratory staff
Maintain confidentiality of patient information
Laboratory Safety & Infection Control
Follow biosafety and infection control guidelines
Properly dispose of biomedical waste
Use personal protective equipment (PPE) consistently
Handle hazardous chemicals and biological materials safely
Support to Medical Staff
Assist pathologists, laboratory scientists, and physicians
Prepare reagents, culture media, and slides
Participate in case discussions when required
Inventory & Resource Management
Monitor laboratory supplies and reagents
Maintain stock records and report shortages
Ensure proper storage conditions for reagents and samples
Compliance & Ethics
Adhere to hospital policies, legal regulations, and accreditation standards
Maintain professional ethics and patient confidentiality
Participate in audits and inspections
Continuous Learning & Development
Update knowledge of new laboratory techniques and technologies
Attend training sessions, workshops, and competency assessments
Follow advances in diagnostic testing
