The city stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone embellished by a fort at the top, known as Jaisalmer Fort or Sonar Killa . The fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the largest fortifications in the world with denizens having abode in It. It has yellow sandstone walls which appear ochre-colored during the day and honey-gold during sun set, spectacularly merging with the desert and adding to the yellow-golden tinge of the city.
