about the project
this is a unique opportunity to participate in the curation and presentation of a private heritage restoration project involving a colonial-era house built in 1914 in mussoorie. the heritage house has been meticulously restored over the past two years, alongside the acquisition and restoration of over 90 pieces of antique furniture and various 19th20th century decorative arts, including stoneware, engravings, and lithographs. the journey has been documented through thousands of photographs and videos.
the project is now entering the final stages, involving redesign of wash rooms, courtyards, facades, land scaping, iron monger, wall and spatial layout and dcor, furniture and furnishings, with a strong emphasis on authenticity and heritage sensitivity.
role: heritage architect/supervisor
we are seeking a hands-on professional to be based at mussoorie, for the duration of 3 months, to support in the planning and execution of the final stages as listed above.
the person should have hands on experience in implementing artisanal surface finishes such as indian patent stone (ips), oxide based floorings, terrazzo, mosaic, lime, arraish, lime wash etc.
the role involves close engagement with materials, craftsmen, and on-site execution, ensuring that all finishes align with the architectural character and historical integrity of the property.
the person shall assist in design & execution pertaining to spatial planning of both interiors and exteriors, lighting, washroom, kitchen, pantry make overs, ironmongery, landscaping, furnishings and interiors.
we shall provide a single bedroom accommodation, with attached bathroom and kitchenette, about 2kms from the site. the person shall need to take are of food, house keeping, laundry and other daily essentials.
key responsibilities
surface & finish execution
l assist in and supervise execution of oxide flooring, ips, microcement, terrazzo, lime/cement plasters, and exposed concrete finishes
l ensure correct substrate preparation, material mixing, application techniques, curing, and surface protection
l coordinate with applicators, craftsmen, and site teams
l monitor timelines while maintaining finish quality and consistency
material & sample development
l develop trial panels and mock-ups for flooring and wall finishes
l support colour matching, pigment selection, and texture development
l document finish processes for reference and repeatability
l identify and resolve material or finish-related issues on site
design & layout
l assist in spatial planning of interior and exterior spaces
l assist in light and electrical layout and execution
l assist in land scape design and implementation
l assist in design and execution of bathroom, kitchen, pantry make overs
l assist in execution of interior layout and furnishings
heritage sensitivity & coordination
l ensure materials & finishes respect the heritage character and architectural language of the house
l coordinate with lead architects, designers, and project leads to interpret design intent
l assist where required in the integration and placement of restored furniture and decorative objects
quality control & documentation
l conduct quality checks prior to final handover
l maintain basic documentation including site photographs, finish samples, and process notes
l support archival documentation of execution phases
desired skills & qualifications
background in civil engineering, architecture, interior design or product/material design, or equivalent hands-on finishing experience
understanding of cement & lime based materials and artisanal surface finishes
proficiency in cad, in interpreting designs and drawings and re-modelling the same when needed.
familiarity with on-site execution, curing processes, and quality control
strong attention to detail and sensitivity to surface quality
patience and discipline required for artisanal and heritage work
practical problem-solving mindset on site
clear communication and ability to work closely with applicators and site teams
