Critical Care Medicine Consultant
: Involved in, the care of all patients admitted to the ICU. Will act as the coordinator of the care plan and act as the primary resource person for rotating ICU residents. Will supervise and instruct rotating ICU residents, ensuring that proper techniques are followed at all times. Consult with the ICU attending physician about all consults seen, new patients admitted and all major changes in a patients condition. While on call, will participate in, or conduct morning rounds, the afternoon handover round and an evening round if needed on all patients. Will ensure that residents and nurses understand the care plan for each patient and ensure that appropriate orders are written and that relatives, attending physicians and consultants are kept informed of the patients condition and progress. To Patients gives support for hemodynamic instability (hypertension/hypotension), airway or compromise (such as ventilator support), acute renal failure, potentially lethal cardiac dysrhythmias, and frequently the cumulative effects of multiple organ system failure. Patients admitted to the intensive care unit not requiring support for the above are usually admitted for intensive/invasive monitoring, such as the crucial hours after major surgery when deemed too unstable to transfer to a less intensively monitored unit.
