key responsibilities
i. strategic management & leadership
team leadership: lead, mentor, and manage the team of toolmakers, designers, machinists, and technicians. drive a culture of high performance, safety, and continuous improvement.
budget & cost control: develop, manage, and adhere to the tool room budget, including capital expenditure for new machinery and procurement of raw materials and spares. focus on cost-effective operations.
strategy development: formulate and implement the long-term vision, strategy, policies, and procedures for the tool room to enhance operational efficiency and productivity.
cross-functional collaboration: serve as the key liaison between the tool room and other departments (production, design/engineering, quality, procurement) to align tooling activities with overall production goals.
ii. tooling operations & maintenance
tool manufacturing & design: oversee the end-to-end process of designing, developing, and manufacturing new tools, dies, molds, jigs, and fixtures, ensuring they meet quality, efficiency, and safety specifications.
preventive maintenance (pm): establish and manage a robust preventive and predictive maintenance program for all tooling to minimize breakdowns and extend tool life.
tool repair & troubleshooting: direct and manage all repair, modification, and troubleshooting activities for existing tools, ensuring quick resolution to production-critical issues.
technology & process optimization: drive continuous improvement initiatives (., lean manufacturing, 5s) in tool room processes. evaluate and implement new technologies, such as advanced cnc, edm, and cad/cam software.
iii. quality, inventory & safety
inventory management: implement a systematic process for tool inventory management, including tracking, storage, and issuance, to ensure accurate stock levels and timely availability.
quality assurance: ensure all manufactured and repaired tools meet strict quality standards and specifications (., iso, ts/iatf). conduct regular audits.
safety & compliance: enforce all safety protocols and regulations within the tool room. ensure all machinery and operations comply with health, safety, and environmental (hse) requirements.
documentation: maintain accurate and detailed records of tool history, maintenance, repairs, and modifications using a tool management system or erp.
