Neurosurgeon – Job Description

Job Title: Neurosurgeon / Consultant – Neurosurgery

Department: Neurosurgery / Surgery / Trauma

Reports To: Medical Director / Head of Neurosciences

Location: Multispeciality Hospital / Neuro Centre

Job Summary

A Neurosurgeon is responsible for diagnosing and surgically treating disorders of the brain, spine, and nervous system. The role includes conducting OPD consultations, performing complex neurosurgical procedures, managing trauma cases, and ensuring high standards of pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Assessment

Evaluate patients with neurological symptoms such as headaches, seizures, trauma, weakness, spine pain, and sensory issues.

Review patient medical history, imaging reports, and diagnostic tests.

Diagnose brain, spine, and nerve-related disorders.

Diagnostic Responsibilities

Order, review, and interpret tests including:

MRI, CT Scan, X-ray

EEG, EMG, NCV

Angiography studies

Perform bedside neurological examinations and assessments.

Surgical Responsibilities

Perform complex neurosurgical procedures including:

Brain tumor surgery

Spine surgery (open and minimally invasive)

Trauma surgeries (head injury, spinal injury)

Aneurysm and vascular neurosurgeries

Endoscopic neurosurgery

Pediatric neurosurgery

Hydrocephalus shunt procedures

Manage surgical planning, execution, and post-operative care.

Ensure patient safety and follow surgical protocols strictly.

Treatment & Patient Management

Design individualized treatment plans (surgery, medical therapy, rehabilitation).

Manage ICU and critical neuro cases.

Provide follow-up care and rehabilitation guidance.

Respond to neuro emergencies (stroke, trauma, hemorrhage).

Collaboration & Coordination

Work closely with neurologists, radiologists, ICU doctors, orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, and rehab teams.

Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions.

Maintain thorough documentation of surgeries, patient assessments, and follow-up notes.

Required Qualifications

MBBS from a recognized university.

MS General Surgery (mandatory).

MCh Neurosurgery or DNB Neurosurgery from a recognized medical college/institution.

Valid State Medical Council Registration.

Preferably trained in advanced neurosurgical techniques (microsurgery, minimally invasive spine surgery).

Key Skills

Advanced surgical skills in brain and spine procedures.

Strong diagnostic abilities in neurological disorders.

Excellent decision-making in critical and emergency situations.

Good communication & patient counseling.

Ability to work long hours and handle high-pressure trauma cases.

Knowledge of neurosurgery equipment (operating microscope, endoscope, neuronavigation, etc.).
