An Industrial Safety Officer in a metallurgy company specializing in nickel alloys is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards unique to high-temperature metal processing. Their primary mission is to protect workers from severe risks like molten metal splashes, toxic gas exposure, and heavy machinery accidents while ensuring strict compliance with environmental and occupational health regulations.
Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment
• Conduct Job Safety Analyses (JSA) and Comprehensive Risk Assessments for high-risk metallurgical zones, including electric arc furnaces (EAF), AOD converters, and casting bays.
• Monitor airborne hazards unique to nickel alloy production, such as nickel dust, chromium vapors, and sulfur dioxide, ensuring exposure levels remain well below permissible limits.
• Evaluate thermal hazards related to molten metal handling and radiant heat exposure.
Safety Inspections & Audits
• Perform daily walkthroughs of production floors to enforce the correct use of specialized Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like aluminized fire-resistant suits.
• Audit lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedures during the maintenance of heavy machinery, rolling mills, and high-voltage equipment.
• Inspect emergency response systems, including eye-wash stations near acid pickling lines, fire suppression systems, and gas detection networks.
Incident Investigation & Reporting
• Lead root-cause analysis (RCA) for all near-misses, injuries, and equipment damage.
• Maintain digital logs of safety metrics, Total Recordable Incident Rates (TRIR), and statutory government reports.
• Develop corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to eliminate recurring structural or behavioral hazards.
Training & Culture
• Design and deliver safety training modules covering confined space entry, crane safety, hot work permits, and hazardous chemical handling.
• Facilitate daily toolbox talks with plant operators and maintenance crews to reinforce a proactive safety culture.
