Anesthesiologist – Job Description

Job Title: Anesthesiologist / MD Anaesthesia / DNB Anaesthesia

Department: Operation Theatre (OT) / ICU

Reports To: Medical Superintendent / Head of Anaesthesia

Location: Hospital / Surgical Centre

Job Summary

The Anesthesiologist is responsible for administering anesthesia to patients undergoing surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures. The role involves pre-operative assessment, intra-operative anesthesia management, post-operative care, pain management, and emergency response duties.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Operative Responsibilities

Conduct detailed pre-anesthesia check-ups (PAC).

Evaluate patient medical history, lab reports, allergies, and risk factors.

Decide appropriate anesthesia techniques (General, Regional, Spinal, Epidural, Local).

Counsel patients and obtain informed consent.

Intra-Operative Responsibilities

Administer anesthesia safely and monitor patients during surgery.

Manage airway, ventilation, hemodynamics, and anesthesia depth.

Coordinate with surgeons, OT nurses, and technicians.

Handle complications or emergencies during procedures.

Maintain sterile and safe OT environment.

Post-Operative Responsibilities

Monitor patients in the recovery room (PACU).

Provide post-operative pain relief and anesthesia reversal guidance.

Manage post-anesthesia complications (nausea, airway issues, vitals instability).

Document anesthesia records accurately.

Critical Care & Emergency Support

Provide anesthesia support for emergency surgeries.

Participate in ICU rounds for ventilator management (if required).

Respond to Code Blue and resuscitation situations.

Manage difficult airway scenarios.

Required Qualifications

MD / DNB in Anaesthesiology (from recognized university).

Valid State Medical Council Registration.

ACLS/BLS certification (preferred).

Key Skills

Expertise in general and regional anesthesia techniques.

Strong understanding of physiology, pharmacology, and airway management.

Excellent decision-making, crisis management, and communication skills.

Ability to work under pressure during critical cases.

Good coordination with surgical teams and nurses.

Compassionate and professional patient handling.
