As an Academic Counsellor, your primary responsibility will be to provide guidance and support to students on academic matters. You will work closely with students to help them navigate their academic journey, and assist them in achieving their educational goals.
Some of the key duties you may be expected to perform include:
1) Advising students on academic requirements, course selection, and degree programs
2) Providing guidance on study skills, time management, and academic success strategies
3) Monitoring students' academic progress and making recommendations for improvement
4) Identifying and addressing academic or personal issues that may be impacting students' performance
5) Collaborating with faculty, staff, and other academic support services to ensure students have access to necessary resources
6) Assisting students in navigating the university's policies and procedures
7) Providing referrals to other support services as needed
8) Participating in the development and delivery of workshops and programs designed to enhance students' academic success.
To be successful in this role, you will need excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds, and a deep understanding of academic programs and requirements. You should also be able to work independently, as well as collaboratively with faculty and staff members, to provide comprehensive support to students. A background in counselling, student services, or a related field, as well as knowledge of student development theory and practices, will be an added advantage.
