Job Summary:
The Lathe Turner will be responsible for setting up, operating, and performing maintenance on conventional and/or CNC lathes to produce metal components according to engineering drawings and specifications. This role requires a strong understanding of turning operations, material properties, precision measurement, and strict adherence to safety protocols to ensure the production of high-quality parts.
Responsibilities:
Machine Setup: Set up conventional or CNC lathe machines according to job orders, including mounting and aligning workpieces, selecting and installing appropriate cutting tools (inserts, tool bits), and adjusting machine controls (speeds, feeds, depth of cut).
Operation: Operate lathe machines safely and efficiently to perform various turning operations such as turning, facing, boring, threading, knurling, and drilling on metal workpieces.
Blueprint & Drawing Interpretation: Accurately read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications, including understanding dimensions, tolerances, and surface finish requirements.
Precision Measurement: Perform in-process and final inspections of machined parts using precision measuring instruments (., calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, depth gauges) to ensure strict adherence to specified dimensions and tolerances.
Tool Management: Monitor tool wear and replace worn or broken tools. Understand proper tool geometry and selection for different materials and turning operations.
Troubleshooting & Maintenance: Identify and troubleshoot basic machining issues (., chatter, poor surface finish, tool breakage). Perform routine preventive maintenance on lathes, including cleaning, lubrication, and checking fluid levels. Report major mechanical issues to supervisors or maintenance staff.
Material Handling: Safely load and unload raw materials and finished components from the machine.
Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, company policies, and machine-specific safety procedures, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Record Keeping: Maintain accurate production logs, including job details, material usage, and inspection results.
Work Area Maintenance: Keep the workstation and surrounding area clean, organized, and free from hazards.
Team Collaboration: Work effectively with production supervisors, quality inspectors, and other team members to ensure smooth workflow and meet production deadlines.
