Job Summary:
The Documentary Executive will be responsible for identifying, developing, and commissioning high-quality documentary projects from concept to completion. This role requires a deep understanding of the documentary landscape, strong storytelling instincts, robust project management skills, and the ability to manage budgets, teams, and stakeholder relationships to deliver compelling and successful films or series.
Responsibilities:
Content Strategy & Development:
Identify compelling stories, emerging trends, and potential subjects for documentary films or series.
Develop and refine documentary concepts, pitches, and proposals that align with the company's vision and target audience.
Evaluate incoming project submissions and assess their creative, commercial, and technical viability.
Conduct research and contribute to the factual accuracy and narrative strength of projects.
Production Oversight & Management:
Oversee the entire production lifecycle, from pre-production (research, scripting, budgeting, scheduling) through principal photography, post-production (editing, sound design, color grading), and delivery.
Manage project budgets, timelines, and resources efficiently, ensuring projects are delivered on scope and within budget.
Identify, hire, and manage key creative and production personnel (directors, producers, cinematographers, editors).
Ensure compliance with all legal, ethical, and regulatory guidelines relevant to documentary filmmaking (., intellectual property, fair use, subject consent).
Creative & Editorial Input:
Provide strong creative and editorial guidance to documentary teams, fostering a collaborative environment while maintaining the project's vision.
Review scripts, rushes, cuts, and final deliverables, providing constructive feedback to enhance storytelling and production quality.
Champion the narrative integrity and artistic vision of each project.
Stakeholder & Partnership Management:
Build and maintain strong relationships with internal teams, external partners, broadcasters, streamers, funding bodies, and distributors in India and internationally.
Negotiate contracts, rights, and licensing agreements.
Represent the company at industry events, film festivals, and pitching forums.
Market & Industry Knowledge:
Stay abreast of the latest trends in documentary filmmaking, distribution models, audience consumption habits, and technological advancements.
Possess a strong understanding of the Indian media and entertainment landscape.
