key responsibilities of a goods train manager

the gtm is the sole authority commanding the goods train and is responsible for safety and operational adherence from the brake van (the last coach) of the train.

1. train operations and safety

final authority: commands the loco pilot (driver) to start, stop, or manage the movement of the goods train. no train can move without the gtm's permission.

brake power certificate (bpc): conducts and supervises a thorough brake continuity test with the loco pilot and signs the bpc, certifying that the train's brake system is fully functional and safe for the journey.

vehicle guidance (vg): receives and verifies the vehicle guidance (vg) document, which details the number of wagons, load in each wagon, their placement, and the total tonnage.

observation & inspection: continuously monitors the train formation while in motion from the brake van, looking for any abnormalities, such as hot axles, flat tires, or loose couplings, and takes immediate corrective action.

signalling and communication: exchanges signals with station masters, rival train crews, and other railway staff. communicates continuously with the divisional control office.

protection: in case of an accident or a breakdown, the gtm is responsible for physically protecting the train as per rules (., using flares and detonators) to prevent other trains from crashing.

2. commercial and documentation duties

cargo management: oversees and ensures the proper loading and sealing of goods in wagons, especially for dangerous or restricted cargo, to comply with safety and commercial regulations.

documentation: maintains and updates all necessary official papers and reports for the entire train journey, including the combined train report and late arrival report.

troubleshooting: coordinates with the loco pilot to identify and resolve minor technical or operational issues that arise during transit.

3. work environment

irregular hours: the job does not have fixed timings and requires working in shifts (including long hours, nights, weekends, and holidays) as the duty span is defined from one point to another, not by time alone.

travel: involves constant travel between stations along the freight routes.

field duty: it is predominantly a field job with minimal desk work, requiring fitness and adaptability.
