chairside assistance
assist the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures such as fillings, crowns, extractions, root canals, and cleanings.
prepare the treatment area and ensure the dentist has the necessary tools and materials during procedures.
pass instruments and materials to the dentist as needed.
use suction devices and other equipment to maintain a clear field during treatment.
ensure patient comfort before, during, and after dental procedures.
patient preparation and care
greet and seat patients in the dental operatory.
review patient medical history and prepare them for examination or treatment.
explain dental procedures and provide reassurance to anxious patients.
provide post-operative care instructions as directed by the dentist.
sterilization and infection control
clean and sterilize dental instruments and equipment using autoclaves or other sterilization methods.
disinfect treatment rooms between patients and ensure compliance with infection control standards.
follow osha, cdc, and local infection prevention protocols strictly.
radiography and imaging
take dental x-rays (intraoral and panoramic) as prescribed by the dentist.
properly position patients and protect them with lead aprons.
process and store digital or film x-rays, ensuring quality and clarity.
maintain radiology equipment and safety logs.
dental charting and record keeping
document dental procedures, findings, and treatment plans in patient charts or electronic dental records (edr).
record vital signs and medical updates as needed.
maintain confidentiality of patient records and comply with hipaa regulations.
instrument and material management
set up trays for each procedure with appropriate instruments and materials.
monitor inventory levels of dental supplies and materials.
reorder or restock as necessary to ensure uninterrupted operation.
mix dental materials (cements, impression materials, etc.) as required.
office and administrative duties
schedule patient appointments and send reminders.
answer phone calls and manage patient inquiries.
process patient billing and insurance claims (if required).
handle administrative paperwork and data entry.
oral hygiene instruction and education
instruct patients on proper brushing, flossing, and overall oral hygiene.
provide guidance on post-treatment care (., after extractions or fluoride treatments).
educate children and adults on preventive dental care and nutrition tips.
support in specialized procedures (depending on training & local regulations)
assist in orthodontic, periodontic, or oral surgery procedures.
take dental impressions for models, crowns, or mouthguards.
apply fluoride or sealants under dentist supervision.
fabricate temporary crowns or trays, if qualified.
equipment maintenance and compliance
maintain and inspect dental equipment regularly for proper function.
report malfunctions and coordinate repairs.
ensure operatory and instruments are maintained in a state of readiness.
emergency preparedness
be prepared to assist in medical emergencies, such as allergic reactions or fainting.
maintain cpr certification and know emergency protocols.
professionalism and continuing education
maintain a professional demeanor with patients and coworkers.
stay up to date with new techniques, safety standards, and dental technology through continuing education and certifications.
adhere to ethical and legal standards in all activities.
