The WIC logo is a kolam, a folk tradition carried forward mostly by women in South India. In olden days, kolams were drawn with coarse rice flour. The rice powder is said to invite birds and other small creatures to eat it, thus inviting other beings into ones home and everyday life: a daily tribute to harmonious coexistence. It is a sign of invitation to welcome all into the home. Kolams are intricate, complex and finely balanced in their design; a rhetoric of our social fabric which needs the kolams integrity to keep it harmoniously together. Kolams represent individuality, community and plurality all at the same time.
